Autopsie universitaire : « At Berkeley » de Frederick Wiseman

Ce documentaire-fleuve de 4 heures peut, en apparence, décontenancer, troubler le spectateur. Cependant, Frédéric Wiseman avec une approche clinique, qui emprunte à la chirurgie, confère une dimension dramatique à ce film qui explore les coulisses de la prestigieuse université Berkeley (Californie). Le regard du réalisateur est incisif, percutant. En effet, plusieurs problématiques se mêlent ici. Comment conserver un enseignement d’excellence dans un contexte de désengagement progressif de l’État ? Comment faire face à la compétition universitaire internationale qui s’intensifie ? Ces interrogations constituent le fil directeur de ce documentaire structuré comme un marathon. Ainsi, le film s’enchaine, s’articule autour de ces défis sous la forme d’une véritable tension dramatique qui tient constamment le spectateur en haleine. Wiseman parvient donc à rendre passionnantes des réunions administratives qui apparaissent, en apparence, rébarbatives et ennuyeuses. C’est là que se révèle le génie du montage qui dévoile la logique interne du message que Wiseman veut faire passer : la parole comme révélatrice des failles du système.

 

Au fond, le réalisateur s’attache à penser le fonctionnement de l’institution universitaire, à dévoiler les forces qui la travaillent en profondeur en révélant la multiplicité des acteurs : du jardinier qui tond le gazon à l’aube au doyen de la faculté perdu aux prises avec les bilans financiers. C’est cette profusion de regards, d’analyses, de points de vues qui façonnent le futur de Berkeley University, qui crystallise ici les tensions qui traversent les grandes institutions publiques américaines. À l’inverse de certains cinéastes, comme Jero Yun et de son film Madame B. Histoire d’une Nord-Coréenne, qui s’attachent à explorer les marges de la société afin d’en révéler les mécanismes, Wiseman dissèque les grandes institutions en apparence intangibles, impénétrables, imposantes. Ce faisant, il questionne la conscience américaine.

 

En somme, At Berkeley livre une analyse profondément politique, devrais-je dire polémique, sur l’état actuel de l’université publique. Au-delà cet aspect, le film se veut aussi poétique, délivrant un regard tendre sur ces nouvelles têtes estudiantines qui se pressent sur les bancs de Berkeley avant de courir les allées du campus en protestant contre les inégalités sociales. Dans une séquence qui marque la première partie du film, une enseignante exalte la diversité du corps étudiant, la pluralité de leurs parcours – les vétérans côtoient les lycéens les plus brillants – qui participent du rayonnement sans cesse renouvelé de la Californie. C’est sans doute là que se trouve le cœur du film : l’idée que l’innovation et la diversité permettent de surmonter les plus grandes difficultés.
